Introduction and Concepts

Thank you for downloading and using NoteCard. We hope you find it helpful in furthering your musical studies.

What is NoteCard?

NoteCard is an advanced software tool with a very simple purpose: to help you learn your ‘musical alphabet’ — the notes of written music. NoteCard works with relentless efficiency but at your own pace. It is suitable for musicians at any level who wish to improve their note-reading skills.

For a description of NoteCard’s key benefits, please see Using Notecard.

To begin using NoteCard, you need only select the instrument and clef you wish to study.

Clicking the Quiz Setup Button at the bottom right of the NoteCard window opens the Quiz Setup task panel, shown here with default settings. Drop-down lists let you choose from the available instrument and clef options. See Quiz Setup Tips for details. When you begin study under new quiz settings, the Progress Gauge at upper left shows your overall rating to be zero, as you would expect. Each time you take a quiz, your rating is updated.

Notes are introduced a few at a time in a series of levels, and cemented in memory with short, targeted quizzes.

Your quiz responses are continuously graded for accuracy and speed to produce an overall numerical rating. As you master more notes, and your recognition accuracy and speed improve, your rating will increase towards the maximum score of 100. Along the way, you can turn to the Progress Task for graphical views that tell you how far you have already come, and where you stand now in relation to your goal.

Free Mode vs Paid Mode

NoteCard has two distinct faces, called Free Mode and Paid Mode. Although Free Mode, the basic program, leaves out some bells and whistles, it is still a powerful and effective note-learning tool. Paid Mode goes even further by providing enrichments that help hold your interest and enhance learning. After installing NoteCard on your computer for the first time, you can test both modes freely for up to ten days. See License Modes for further details.

Note: Quiz ratings, the Progress Task, and the Progress Gauge are included in Paid Mode only.
